Sex, Drugs and Death: A Trifecta of American Hangups - November 24, 2008
Philalawyer and I decided to shoot the breeze again, this time on a trio of issues he refers to as a "Trifecta of American Hang-ups." The man has some very compelling ideas and is significantly smarter than you or me. Well, probably just me. Below is an excerpt, and click here to read the first part of our conversation in its entirety.
Dr. Rob: Last year my doctor asked me if I had ever done drugs. When I told him that I had smoked marijuana in graduate school he said, "Not girlie drugs. Every idiot's done pot in college. Just stay away from the hard stuff." I'm not entirely sure if he's a good doctor, but when medical professionals couldn't care less if you do a little cannibis it makes me think our War on Drugs could stand a little tweaking of philosophy.

I'm not sure if "girlie" is the best adjective for it, really, unless you consider that it used to make me mood swingy and paranoid. It was like PMS, only smelled worse!

Interesting post. I've thought about this myself. Are there any studies on the effects of acid on the brain that you could point me to?

Great post thus far DocRob. Really interesting. I find myself feeling very much like "drugs are bad mmmk." I can't help myself. But, I also think drinking is really bad but people just can't seem to stop themselves. I have met people who have taken marijuana and now have panic attacks which leads me to believe that perhaps it is best to stay away. I don't really understand why people need to alter their state of mind completely anyway. I am growing, though, as an individual and I am trying my best to shake off my "conservatism" but there are just some things I can't move past. Well, can't wait to read the rest!!

As part of my job, I often accompany my clients to their psychiatrist appointments. I've more than once witnessed a psychiatrist telling a person with serious mental illness that they would much rather see them smoking the occasional joint than drinking a 6 pack (which has more potential to interact with meds.) They're not outright encouraging marijuana use, of course, but they do seem to imply that it is an acceptable alternative to other substances. I don't know if I agree with this, just sharing what I've witnessed.
